Cormoran was purchased with his sister Huffle in June 2020 after I saw them advertised for sale online. They are siblings from a set of triplets. Their dad is a ‘Spitti’ Valais Blacknose ram (called Gandalf) and their mum is a black/coloured Blue Face Leicester (called Betty). I was looking around online to see if there were any black/coloured Blue Face Leicester sheep for sale in North Wales when I saw them for sale… I’d saved up some money in the hopes of buying one or two new sheep to join the flock. So when I saw Cormoran and Huffle who were looking for a home together after all their other siblings had been sold already I couldn’t resist them… Cormoran and Huffle are big cuddly sheep. They fitted in here perfectly with our own lambs and it’s hard to imagine the flock without them now. Cormoran’s fleece is very curly with gorgeous sleek black individual locks. Initially, I gave Corm a different name but it didn’t seem to suit him. Then one day my daughter Elsie started referring to him as ‘The Giant’ which is very true – he is absolutely huge now! I was reading at the time a certain novel about a fictional detective…and it just struck me Cormoran was the perfect name for this guy, named after the Cornish giant – perfect and it has stuck ever since. Cormoran’s first fleece was turned into a beautiful felted fleece rug. His fleece lends itself very well to felting and is a joy to work with.

I bought Huffle and her brother Griffin in June 2020 after seeing them advertised for sale online. Their dad is a ‘Spitti’ Valais Blacknose ram and their mum is a black/coloured Blue Face Leicester. I’ve wanted to add a coloured Blue Face Leicester to the flock for some time but when I saw these two I just couldn’t resist them instead. I spent some of my own savings on buying them. I’m not the sort of person who buys clothes or shoes or handbags or items for our home. I typically end up buying a sheep or 2 if I decide to treat myself. Huffle and her brother Griffin will have a home for life here with our other sheep. I’m very intrigued to watch them grown and see them as adult sheep. When they first arrived Huffle was very noisy and shy. But she very soon settled down and came out of her shell. She is a very affectionate friendly lamb now. She and her bro’s name have a bit of a ‘Harry Potter’ theme to them, like some of our other sheep. I’m not a big fan of Harry Potter or anything but I do love the names that pop up. Huffle’s fleece is quite different from her brothers. It is fairly open and crimpy. I don’t imagine it will be a very soft fleece when she is an adult but as a wool addict, I’m super interested to see how their fleeces grow and put them to good use.

I bought Lily from a friend in early March 2019 along with Noddy and Norbert. Lily was just 24 hours old when I picked her up and so very tiny next to Noddy and Norbert who were huge at 5 days old. Lily looked cold and feeble when we got her home so we quickly made a makeshift jumper for her from the sleeve of my mums cream coloured wool and mohair jumper – perfect! Of course, she moved into the house straight away and made herself at home in a large cardboard box in our upstairs bathroom. At a few days old I felt there was something not quite right with Lily. She struggles to stand and hardly moved about at all. Her breathing was erratic, she just seemed dull compared to other lambs. I popped her down to the vets fearing she might have the beginnings of Pneumonia. A lovely vet checked her over and concluded that it was not her lungs that were the issue but actually her heart. She had been born with a severe heart defect and I was told it was likely she would not do very well, she would always be small and may suddenly have a heart attack and pass away. The vet didn’t think she was in pain but she offered to put her to sleep which was absolutely not an option at that time. Lily didn’t know any different and she was definitely happy so we decided to carry on and let her have whatever life she could. For the first few weeks of her life, she was very delicate and I feared she would collapse at times when she exerted herself but she grew stronger and stronger and just never looked back. All that seems like a distant dream. Looking at Lily now I forget how fragile she was and how I feared I might find her dead each time I went to check on her. Lily grew into a big beautiful adult sheep she has always had such a gentle sweet personality. Not pushy or greedy like a lot of hand-reared lambs. She is just perfect and I hope she will have many happy healthy years ahead of her. When Lily was sheared for the first time in 2020 she was very well behaved. I have saved her precious baby fleece to make something special for our own home. Lily herself is a bit big now to fit in the house…though I think she would still give it a try.
