Handmade Curly Cream Felted Sheepskin Seat Pad Alice

This beautiful curly cream felted sheepskin seat pad has been made using part of Alice’s 2023 fleece. Sometimes called ‘vegetarian sheepskins’ or ‘felted fleeces’ this is a sheep-friendly craft handmade from natural wool.

The sheep: Alice is a lovely gentle Greyface Dartmoor cross Wensleydale breed sheep. She is a big chunky sheep who has the most magical looking long curly locks that have a natural shine to them and always make me think of unicorn manes. You can see Alice and Lily who also played a role in creating this seat pa and their sheep friends in the photos checking out this seat pad.

The process: This seat pad has been made by carefully selecting and separating individual locks from Alice’s fleece and arranging them in a circular shape. Carded wool from some of our other sheep is placed on the back along with decorative locks and yarn and then felted by hand. The felted wool underside is thick and textured and very carefully made. Decorated with dainty locks from another of our sheep Lily and with handspun wool yarn and Alice’s name needle felted on making this magical felted seat cover even more magical and unique. The backing felt is made from carded wool from our other sheep, as is the yarn. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away growing wonderful wool.

The seat pad: Made of big curly locks in shades of cream and white this is a dreamy looking seat pad. It is a large size and a bit of a heavyweight as seat pads go. It could easily be used on an armchair or draped on a sofa. It would make a pretty little circular rug too.

Size: Approx 65-70 cm in diameter lock tip to lock tip measuring on the fleece top side. The underside felted area is approx 40cm in diameter – the locks overhand the felt and will drape down when placed on a kitchen chair or stool.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium soft like very fine curly hair.

Colour: Natural white/cream.

Hair loss: Minimal – there is a little loss of hairs which is normal. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): Few and far between with this item. But as always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt I have done my best to remove the ones I came across. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep. It’s been through a lot, it’s seen a lot, it’s kept a sheep warm and dry and even cool at times.. its probably been dragged through a hedge (or two!), splattered with mud at some point, sprinkled with hay at another and rolled around in the spring clover as it naturally started to rise and break away from its 4 legged creator and I got my shears out – all that and the wool still looks beautiful.. none the worse for wear.. isn’t wool amazing!

Fleeces get washed during the felting process and then they all get a thorough wash or two after they are felted so they are thoroughly clean and smell divine. They are left to dry in the open air or sometimes draped beside the stove in winter. I am passionate about keeping things natural and energy use to a minimum when making my woollen crafts.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

Handcrafted felted fleece wool cushion made from part of Alice and Hermione’s 2021 fleeces…

This beautiful one of a kind cushion is made from pure wool and love. Every element of it is handmade. The gorgeous long curly cream fleeces of Alice and her friend Hermione have been used to create the dreamy fleece side. They have also been incorporated into the heavily textured reverse side which is also made of felted wool.

I used a mix of light beige/tan and white fleece from a sheep called Muffin and a selection of my handspun yarn from these 3 sheep along with locks to create the pretty felted panel for the back of the cushion. The panel was made in such a way that the cushion’s wool stuffing does not spill out. Front and back of the cushion are decoratively stitched together with handspun wool also from Alice. The two handmade pottery heart buttons were bought from a fellow crafter in the UK and allow the cushion to be opened and the natural wool stuffing removed or added to. This means you can handwash the cover of the cushion and replace the stuffing if ever necessary.

Alice and Hermione who take credit for this cushion are Wensleydale cross sheep who live with many other sheep friends at my home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. They have the most amazing thick wavy woolly curls that have a silky hair like feel to them and make the most stunning felted rugs, seat covers and now cushions! This particular cushion was made with leftover locks from Alice’s 2021 fleece. But there wasn’t quite enough so I used some of Hermione’s slightly curlier and finer locks to complete the front of the cushion. Each wool lock is individually arranged in a wooden frame before it is wet felted by hand. A time-consuming process but well worth it for the end results.

I don’t buy in ready prepared processed wool everything is made by my hands here at the farm. The only parts of this cushion that are not are the pottery buttons and the thread holding them in place.

This cushion will look truly beautiful in any home. It is ideal to place upon a sofa or bed and admire. Perfect to add a touch of decorative woollen luxury and keep you cosy! This cushion has been made with light use in mind I would suggest that it is cared for gently. It is a piece of art and best suited to decorative purposes and light use. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Please note like most felted fleeces it may shed wool/fibers to some degree – however, with this cushion that is minimal.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 68cm x 48cm that is including the wool locks. The reverse side is smaller approx 58cm x 38cm. The depth of the cushion is around 15-25cm depends where you measure.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is almost hair-like. It isn’t coarse it is somewhat soft and silky and like hair.

Colour: Hairy fleece side – The colour of the fleeces used for this cushion is a natural creamy white colour with a bit of a shine to it. Felted back – The colour of the reverse side is a mix of beige tan and creams and white.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I used the clean parts of Alice and Hermione’s fleece for this cushion and spent a lot of time removing any noticeable bits of debris that I’d missed. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. these are very few and far between and only add to the naturalness of this handmade piece.

Felted wool fleeces and cushions are best suited to light use and a clean environment but will last for years and years if cared for and treated with respect. This cushion can be unbuttoned and the wool stuffing removed so the cover can be hand washed.

Like everything I make it is a unique item even more so as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. I shear the sheep myself with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm them or their fleeces. The proceeds from the sale of this fleece will help pay for Alice and Hermione’s and their flockmates’ food, care products, and any veterinary help they need throughout the year.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.

Stunning unique felted fleece sheepskin rug handmade from Alice's 2020 fleece - just wool...

This beautiful oval rug is made from the lustrous curly fleece from Alice (pictured in the photos). Alice is a Wensleydale cross Greyface Dartmoor sheep who lives with many other sheep friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared Alice myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm them or their fleeces. This vegetarian sheepskin rug is a real heavyweight (a bit like Alice herself!) and luxurious with long wavy locks and the most beautiful curls. It is made using almost the entire fleece that Alice grew in 2020. I spent many hours preparing this fleece and arranging it in a circular/oval shape. It is a unique item as each sheep's fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. The proceeds from the sale of this rug will help pay for Alice and her flockmates' food, care products, and any veterinary help they need throughout the year.

Stunning unique felted fleece sheepskin rug handmade from Alice’s 2020 fleece – just wool…

This beautiful oval felted fleece rug is made from the lustrous curly fleece from Alice (pictured in the photos). It is a unique item as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. The proceeds from the sale of this rug will help pay for Alice and her flockmates’ food, care products, and any veterinary help they need throughout the year.

A natural 100% wool item that is ethical and has great provenance – it has been made in its entirety at our smallholding. The reverse of the rug is made from hand carded wool that is then hand felted to Alice’s fleece. The carded wool used for the backing comes from some of our other sheep, it was washed and hand-carded here on the farm by me. I don’t buy in ready prepared processed wool for the back of my rugs, everything is made by my hands here at the farm. The backing wool is a mix from our sheep Muffin, Norbert and Rupert. It has a warm beige, white colour to it and is decorated with wool locks from Alice herself, Norbert and Hagrid.

Alice’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, photo prop, or floor rug. It is well felted on the reverse and has an amazing luxurious feel and look about it. I would class it as a heavyweight rug, it weighs a lot for its size so it is probably not something you would want to sleep under but perfect as a floor rug in a bedroom or cosy sitting room. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it may shed wool/fibers to some degree – however, with this particular rug that is minimal.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light in a clean environment use but will last for years and years if cared for and treated with respect. They can be hand washed too.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 120cm long x 100cm wide. The rug is a round oval shape.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is almost hair like. It isn’t particularly coarse nor is it soft, it is somewhat silky and yep like hair.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural creamy white colour with a bit of a shine to it.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I used mostly the clean parts of Alice’s fleece for this rug and spent a lot of time removing any noticeable bits of debris that I’d missed. However, you can still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. these are very few and far between. Please note there are just a few small areas like this not the majority of the fleece, the do not detract from it in my opinion and are testament to how natural and lightly processed it is.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

A lot of time, care and love go into all my items they are all individually made one at a time by just 1 pair of hands – from caring for and shearing the sheep, washing the wool and crafting an item to the packaging and posting – handmade in the truest sense of the word.
