Natural felted sheepskin fleece rug handmade from Smartie’s 2021 fleece…

This beautiful large felted sheepskin fleece rug is made from the fleece of Smartie the ram (he is pictured in the photos admiring this very fleece). Smartie’s felted fleece is a beautiful white and dark grey/black spotted colour. It is wonderfully fluffy and soft perfect to snuggle up under. The reverse of Smartie’s rug is made from carded wool that is then hand felted to the fleece, a process that takes many hours and elbow grease. I tried to mimic Smartie’s spotted markings on the underside by carefully arranging the black and white carded wool to give a beautiful spotted splotchy pattern. That wool is carded by me on the farm, it is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep – Currant and her and Smartie’s daughter Raisin was used for the black/grey and the white comes from Norbert, Lily and late Rupert. I have also needle felted Smartie’s name on there. The underside of this rug is lovely and soft felt. It is also a very large size in comparison to most felted fleece rugs!

I can personally vouch for how great Smartie’s fleece is as I kept his fleece from 2020 for myself. It is lovely and soft, doesn’t moult, is versatile, perfect to sit upon or snuggle under. I wouldn’t be without my own it has kept me cosy all year. It is not a super heavyweight fleece so if you are looking for a fleece to place on a bed or sofa this one is perfect!

Smartie is a handsome Jacob cross Shetland ram. He lives here with his sons Blackberry and Jim and his daughter Raisin.

This particular fleece is Smartie’s 3rd shear fleece aka the third fleece that he has grown in his lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. You can see this first hand in the photos where it is pictured alongside Smartie’s fleece rug from 2020 which is my own personal fleece that I have on my bed at home. His 2021 fleece has dark grey spots compared to my Smartie fleece which has near black spots.

It seems appropriate to say this now so please note that this listing is just for 1 felted fleece which is his 2021 fleece, the one featured on its own in the photos (not the matching pair – sorry!)

Smartie’s fleece is all-natural 100% wool, animal-friendly and essentially over a year in the making, it has great provenance.

This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by myself and Smartie and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Smartie’s fleece is a great example of a versatile felted fleece rug and I think the photos speak for themselves. It would be suitable for any use, you could use it as a floor rug but for me this rug is most at home draped on bed or a chair or sofa. Perfect to bring a cosy sheep touch to your home!

Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care.

Please note this listing is just for Smartie’s 1 fleece – in some photos, it is pictured with his matching fleece from 2020 which is my own fleece and not included in the price.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 165-180cm long x 100cm wide approx. It is a very large-sized fleece.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is springy and soft in texture. It has some variation in coat type and length, some parts are longer in length and others shorter and softer.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a jazzy dark grey/white spotted pattern, like Smartie himself.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent over 6 hours combing and cleaning this fleece, removing all the debris Smartie had collected throughout the year, bits og hay and dried leaves mostly where he has been fed and foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular piece from Smartie that is very minimal and light.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.

This pretty little peg loom rug has been made using fleece from a local flock of Torddu Welsh Mountain sheep. I bought the fleeces from a local farmer to save them from becoming compost. In 2020 I was asked to make a specific sized rug to order for a very small bedroom in a local holiday home. The rug was to be light beige/tan in colour and so these Torddu fleeces were chosen to weave the rug as they were the perfect light natural colour and so this rug was born. However, the story doesn't end there as the person whom I made the rug never came back to collect it, so I am offering it for sale at a slightly reduced price in the hopes it can now finally find a forever home. It is a smaller size than I would usually make due to the fact it was made specifically to order but I am certain it will be the perfect bedside rug or even bathroom rug for someone out there :)

It was hard do justice to this rug in the photos and to capture the colour of the wool accurately but the photos of the rug on the wooden floor do show the colour most true.

This item was handwoven on my peg loom, it is made from natural local Torddu wool and the warp I used is natural jute twine.

Dimensions: Approx length is 65cm and width is 45-46cm

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium-coarse Torddu wool.

Colour: Very pretty light cream, beige and tan tones.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): You may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed within the fleece but they are very few and only add to the naturalness of this handmade piece.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

This listing is for 1 seat cover the same one as in the photos. Please note in some photos it is pictured with a small rug, this is not included in the price but is available to buy on a separate listing.

Handmade felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug made from Dandelion’s 2020 fleece.. 100% Natural wool

This stunning sheep friendly wool rug is made from Dandelion and Peanut’s fleeces. Dandelion’s fleece is the hairy side and Peanut’s fleece has been used for the felted back of this rug. These fleeces kept them warm and cosy during the harsh wet winter we had this year. Now summer is upon us the sheep are glad to be rid of their coats and set to work munching grass and growing their next beautiful fleece. This rug is completely made by hand here at our home. Dandelion and Peanut live with 70 other sheep here on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Dandelion is very charismatic and appears on quite a few of my profile pictures. I shear all the sheep myself with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm them or their fleece. The proceeds from the sale of this rug will help pay for Dandelion’s and Peanut’s (and their 70 friends and family members) care throughout the year.

The wool from Peanut that I used to felt the back of this rug has been washed and hand-carded here nothing has left the farm to be processed or been bought in making this rug truly sustainable and handmade. As such, I decided to make the reverse of this rug a little more interesting and show off Peanut’s lovely fleece too and make this rug just that bit more special and unique.

This piece would look absolutely stunning draped across a bed or sofa. It is suitable as a floor rug in a low traffic area too… It has a beautiful luxurious look about and is smooth to the touch. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Like most felted sheepskin rugs it does moult a little which is normal especially for these types of dual coated fleeces hence they are best suited for light use and make stunning display pieces.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are at the longest 130cm long x 115cm wide. The rug has a natural irregular shape it is curved at one end which is where Dandelion’s head/neck was and it is irregular at the other where her rear legs were and so some areas measure a bit wider or narrower.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is slightly coarse, smooth and hair like not itchy. The locks are smooth and incredibly long and hairy in places and more short and curly in others.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural grey-brown and white spotted/patches.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent some time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Dandelion collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds mostly… However, you may find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. mostly along the neck of the fleece. But they are few and far between and do pull out quite easily.
