Beautiful slate grey felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug handmade from Astrid’s 2023 fleece…

This beautiful slate grey felted fleece sheepskin rug has been made with Astrid’s 2023 fleece. Sometimes called ‘vegetarian sheepskins’ or ‘felted fleeces’ this is a sheep-friendly craft handmade from natural wool.

The rug: Astrid’s fleece is a beautiful slate grey colour. This rug is made with the whole of Astrid’s 2023 fleece. As fleece rugs go it is quite small in size but beautifully formed and would make a wonderful bedside or hearthside rug. This fleece felted a lot on Astrid before she was shorn as such it is very thick and solid and doesn’t have the ‘drapey’ qualities of some fleeces hence I think it makes super rug as opposed to being ‘draped’ on the back of a sofa or chair. I also reckon this little rug would be a great one to bundle up and take on wild walks and picnics and park your bum on to keep you cosy. The center of the rug or ‘spine’ as I call is shorter wool and has been brushed out to remove field debris (grass seeds and leaves etc). The edges are longer and hairier and I’ve left them natural to show off the beautiful colours and structure of Astrid’s locks. The back of the rug has a gorgeous unique felted design of stars and swirls and a theme of the cosmos.

The sheep: Astrid is a Gotland cross Icelandic sheep. She is a medium-sized sheep who has many characteristics from both breeds. Astrid loves her grub and is forever her head through fences to reach tasty greens on the other side of the fence – as the saying goes ‘the grass is always greener’! The wool used for the backing felt of this rug come from Astrid’s mum Frieda and flock mates Mochi and Daffodil.

The process: This rug is made using the whole of Astrid’s fleece. Her fleece is laid out and prepared then flipped over and prepared some more before carded wool is placed on the back. The pattern and decorations are then carefully arranged and laid out onto the carded wool. The rug is then felted – a very slow and careful process. Afterwards it is thoroughly washed and left to dry naturally in the Welsh sunshine and winds. The felted underside is unique and very carefully made. Decorated with a starry pattern and Astrid’s name needle felted on making this magical felted fleece even more special. The backing felt is made from carded wool from our other sheep, as is the yarn. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away growing wonderful wool.

Details:

Size: A natural fleece shape at its largest it measures approx 108-115cm in length and 70-85cm at its widest with these measurements taken on the top fleece side.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium soft some of Astrid’s fleece is fluffy and soft and other parts are more hairy.

Colour: Natural slate greys with some brown highlights.

Hair loss: Minimal – there is a little loss of hairs which is normal. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): It has been brushed out and picked through to remove as much as possible. But as always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt I have done my best to remove the ones I came across. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep. It’s been through a lot, it’s seen a lot, it’s kept a sheep warm and dry and even cool at times.. its probably been dragged through a hedge (or two!), splattered with mud at some point, sprinkled with hay at another and rolled around in the spring clover as it naturally started to rise and break away from its 4 legged creator and I got my shears out – all that and the wool still looks beautiful.. none the worse for wear.. isn’t wool amazing!

Fleeces get washed during the felting process and then they all get a thorough wash or two after they are felted so they are thoroughly clean and smell divine. They are left to dry in the open air or sometimes draped beside the stove in winter. I am passionate about keeping things natural and energy use to a minimum when making my woollen crafts.

Vegetarian sheepskin rug handmade from Dash’s 2022 fleece…

This wild rug is made from the fleece of little Dash (she is pictured in the photos). Dash’s fleece is a very beautiful pale blue-grey colour with a darker line down the centre of her fleece. The locks are darker on their tips and fade to white at the roots. Her fleece has a beautiful wild rustic appearance with shorter wool down the spine of the fleece which tapers out too much longer wild locks at the edges. The center of the fleece has been lightly brushed to remove grass seeds and leaves and loose fibers of wool. This particular fleece is Dash’s 3rd shear fleece which is the 3rd fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is totally unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

The felt underside of the rug is made from carded wool from different sheep that is then hand-felted to Dash’s fleece. That felted wool is a blend of wool from some of my other sheep – Campion, Clover, Mochi, Daffodil, Frieda. The felt is decorated with handspun wool and wool locks making this rug reversible and even more unique and special. As a finishing touch I have needle-felted Dash’s name on there.

I would describe Dash’s fleece as medium weight, her fleece itself is light as is typical for the Icelandic type fleeces but the felt backing is lovely and thick giving it more weight. It would make a fantastic floor rug or equally suitable to drape on a sofa or bed. It is soft-ish to touch, the edges are a little more more rough and hairy. There is a little hairloss/moulting as is normal for hairy Icelandic type fleeces but it is quite minimal and I think will cease over time.

This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by myself and Dash and the flock at our farm in Wales. It has been over a year in the making, wandering the Welsh hillside and weathering the winter storms with Dash. It truly is a little part of her. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

There is a little more story to Dash’s fleece – this is a fleece kissed by fire. When this fleece wash drying after being felted and then washed, the chair she was draped over accidentally toppled and fell against our wood-burning stove. As you may be aware wool does not readily burn – it is incredible stuff. And so the fleece was whisked off the stove bearing just a faint scar where she had briefly touched the stove. In fact, the most noticeable thing was the smell of singed wool, hence Dash’s fleece was lightly brushed and then washed for a second time. I can honestly say that you would never be able to tell these events had ever occured had I not mentioned this, there is no ill or lasting effect to the fleece. But I am honest so I have to mention it. Not only that but I think it’s a rather good story that needs to be told and stay with this fleece and shows just how wonderful wool is!

Dash’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, light-use floor rug or draped on a chair or bed. Perfect to add a touch of the wild to any home!

Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium soft, hairier at the edges and softer down the center.

Colour: Pale blue grey and whites with some darker brown tips and the underside has browns and whites and greys mixed.

Hair loss: Slight but minimal.

Felted sheepskin rug handmade from Teasel’s 2022 fleece…

This beautiful dark rug is made from the 2022 fleece of Teasel! This is Teasel’s shearling fleece, her first ever fleece, the fleece she was born wearing that grew in size with her over her 1st year of life. The underside of the rug is a matching dark colour with brown and tan handspun wool yarn specifically spun to match the sun-bleached tips of Teasel’s dark colour fleece and then felted in a spiral pattern to give a beautiful design. I have needle-felted Teasel’s name on too. This is a lovely example of a felted fleece that would work perfectly as a floor rug or cover on a chair, sofa or bed this Autumn and Winter.

Teasel’s fleece is a lovely large size! It is a medium-weight fleece, lovely and fluffy, and very warm. Her fleece is lovely and soft and has a gorgeous wild look. The fleece is predominantly dark coloured with some lighter areas and the odd grey streak. The center of the rug has been brushed out to remove vegetable debris that Teasel collected in her fleece from hedges and her supper during the winter months. Teasel’s fleece does moult lightly which is normal for felted fleeces.

The back of the rug is made from carded Shetland wool that is then hand-felted to Teasel’s fleece. The carded wool is processed by me from raw fleeces I bought from the Aklah flock in Malton. The beautiful decoration on the back is created with my own handspun yarn that is carefully arranged in a pattern before the rug is felted. I spend a huge amount of time and care making sure my rugs are felted to a high standard. I am generous with the backing wool ensuring the finished rug is thick and durable and the felting is done with immense care and not rushed resulting in an even tight felt that will last for years and years.

Teasel is a cross breed sheep who lives with her twin sister Betony, their mum Dandelion and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Teasel is a very cheeky character and a bit of a diva sheep. She loves to climb on me if I sit in the field and will relentlessly paw for attention if she isn’t getting enough scratches.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Teasel’s fleece from the 2022 shearing and her first ever fleece. Each rug is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect a fleece, weather, age, diet etc.

This is a completely handmade product with almost every element created by myself and Teasel and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 140-150cm long x 90-100cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is smooth and soft, some areas around the rear legs are a little more hairy.

Colour: The colour of this rug is gorgeous dark brown/black with sunbleached tips and lighter areas along the edges and neck.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Teasel collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have brushed out the very center of Teasel’s fleece to remove most of the debris but you may still find little bits of the Welsh hillside deep within the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular fleece from Teasel there is a little moulting/hairloss which is normal. Moulting does lessen and sometimes ceases entirely after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece and amount of use.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

——————————————————–

Peg loom woven wool rug handmade from 3 fleeces from the same little sheep – ‘Phlox’…

This wild rustic rug is woven from 3 fleeces all from the same little sheep called Phlox! I saved Phlox’s fleeces over the years with the idea of making this large peg loom rug. I wanted to bring the character of Phlox and her black and white rugged fleece into the rug hence it has been purposefully woven to be darker at one end and fade through to white. This really is a special one-of-a-kind rug that had taken countless hours to craft I highly doubt I will make another like this with Phlox’s fleeces. When you think about it, this rug has actually been well over 3 years in the making. To me it is priceless and I was so very tempted to keep it but I made it with the intention to sell and I hope it finds the perfect person and home where it will be loved and treasured for years to come!

The warp of the rug is chunky handspun yarn that is from one of my other sheep – Xena. The tassels are made from locks of wool from Lupin and Mint’s shearling fleeces. Lupin and Mint are Phlox’s half-sisters. The yarn used to tie the tassels and finish the rug is also handspun yarn from Phlox’s mum – Fern. So every element is handcrafted from the flock – nothing bought in or mass processed. Even the little wooden tag is from an old fence post with Phlox’s name burnt on. The tag is just tied in place so you can easily remove it without damaging the rug.

Phlox’s peg loom rug is big! It is super thick and heavy too. Phlox has a hill-type fleece, so some parts are quite rough and contain kemp (small rough hairs) whilst others are softer to touch. It is the type of wool that is very warm and very durable making it ideal for making peg loom rugs. It would be a fantastic rug to place on a hearth or any hard floor to bring a touch of the wild Welsh hillside indoors this Autumn and Winter. This rug was woven with the raw unwashed fleece and then washed afterwards. It has a wonderful woollen earthy smell and still contains some of the natural lanolin found in the fleeces which you can feel when you touch it.

Phlox is a little crossbreed sheep who lives with her daughter Pepsi, mum Fern, twin sister Smudge, half sisters and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Phlox is a very gentle sheep who is quite shy and timid. She doesn’t trust easily and is part of the little gang I call ‘the Wildlings’ !

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This rug is made with 3 separate fleeces from 3 years all from Phlox.

This is a completely handmade product with every element created by myself and Phlox and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 125-159cm long x 74cm wide max.

Wool texture: The feel of this rug is not the softest, it is what I would call a medium feel, neither soft not super coarse it is somewhere inbetween.

Colour: The colour of this rug is blacks, dark browns/greys and white.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Phlox collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves, grass seeds and parts of the Welsh hillside as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece…

Wool rugs often moult or shed to some degree. This particular rug from Phlox may shed a little from the tassels and the little wild kemp hairs within Phlox’s fleece.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

Brown felted sheepskin fleece rug handmade from Humphrey’s 2022 fleece…

This gorgeous cosy rug is made from the 2022 fleece of Humphrey! His fleece is a warm caramel and tan colour, huge in size, there is something very Autumnal and bear-like about it! The underside of the rug is a matching brown/tan/caramel colour with handspun wool yarn felted in for decoration and a lovely texture. I have needle-felted Humphrey’s name on too. This is a lovely versatile example of a felted fleece that would work perfectly as a floor rug or cover on a chair, sofa or bed this Autumn and Winter.

Humphrey’s fleece is big! It is a medium/heavyweight fleece, lovely and thick and very warm. The staple length of the fleece is short down the back/center of the rug and longer at the neck and back legs. The structure is a wavy spiral and soft to the touch. This rug is minimal moulting with almost no loss of fibers so it is perfect to use on a sofa or bed and cosy up under this Autumn.

The back of the rug is made from carded wool that is then hand-felted to Humphrey’s fleece. That felted wool is a mix of wool from Humphrey and some of my other sheep – Martha and Marmalade. It also has wool from the Aklah flock in Malton. The beautiful decoration on the back is created with my own handspun yarn that is carefully arranged in a pattern before the rug is felted. I spend a huge amount of time and care making sure my rugs are felted to perfection. I am generous with the backing wool ensuring the finished rug is thick and durable and the felting is done with immense care and not rushed resulting in even tight felt that will last for years and years.

Humphrey is a wether (castrated male) Icelandic cross sheep who lives with his mum Harriet and dad Sven and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Humphrey is a very cheeky character who loves shoving his nose in pockets to sniff out a treat. His party trick is unzipping coats and hoodies and sometimes even chewing off said zip and attempting to eat it. His best buddies (and partners in crime!) are Ivar and Elder, the three of them are nearly always hanging about together making mischief!

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Humprey’s fleece from the 2022 shearing and the first ever whole felted fleece rug I have made using one of his fleeces. Each rug is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect a fleece, weather, age, diet etc.

This is a completely handmade product with almost every element created by myself and Humphrey and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 125-150cm long x 90-100cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is lovely and soft!

Colour: The colour of this rug is gorgeous warm caramel and tan brown.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Humphrey collected in his fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where he has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have brushed out the very center of Humphrey’s fleece to remove most of the dried leaves debris I could find there but left the rest unbrushed to keep the beautiful structure and character of the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular fleece from Humphrey there is very little to no moulting at all making it a great versatile fleece. Moulting does lessen and sometimes ceases entirely after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece and amount of use.

Felted fleece sheepskin rug handmade from the whole of Jemima’s 2022 fleece…

This pretty rug is handmade from the fleece of Jemima (pictured in the photos.) She has the most beautiful wavy cream fleece with light grey patches around the edges and center of her fleece. It is a large-size heavyweight fleece made using the whole of Jemima’s 2022 fleece. The underside of the rug is a matching mottle grey and white/cream colour with delicate, minimal handspun wool decoration. I have also needle felted Jemima’s name on too. Her fleece is a lovely example of a ‘vegetarian sheepskin and one of my personal favourite fleeces. It is ideal as a floor rug but equally at home placed on a chair or bed. The neutral colours will look beautiful in any setting and bring a touch of woolly luxury to any home.

Jemima is a Leicester Longwool crossbred sheep who lives here with her half-sisters Florence, Tatty, Jasmine, their brother Bruno and many other sheep at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She is big character who loves human attention and having a nosy at all my wool crafts when I am out in the field taking photographs of them. The name Jemima means ‘dove’ hence the little feather that I have needle felted next to her name.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Jemima’s 3rd shear fleece aka the third fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

The reverse of the rug is made from carded and handspun wool that is then hand felted to Jemima’s fleece. It is a mix of wool from several other sheep including Norbert, Daffodil, Frieda and Shamrock.

This is a truly handmade product every element has been created by myself and Jemima and the flock at our farm in Wales. It is made from 100% natural hand-processed wool and is over a year in the making. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 130cm-145cm long x 80-90cm wide. It is an irregular natural shape.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece has a soft silky feel with lovely lustre.

Colour: The colour of this rug is cream and with several small pale grey patches it is very pretty. The edges have some natural staining of grey, gold/brown in places. The underside felt is a mottle of white, cream and grey colours.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): You may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh hillside within the fleece and felt but they are very few and only add to the naturalness of this handmade piece.

All felted fleeces naturally moult or shed to some degree some more than others depending on the fiber type. This particular fleece is minimal moulting.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay and Welsh hillside…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

Curly felted fleece wool rug handmade from part of Hermione’s 2021 fleece…

This gorgeous rug is made from the fleece of Hermione (pictured in the photos.) She has the most beautiful curly white/cream fleece that has one small grey spot. This rug is handmade using a part of Hermione’s fleece that I rearranged into an elongated oval shape. It is the perfect size for a bedside rug or bed runner or a statement piece to drape on a sofa or chair. It would even make a fancy luxurious bathmat! The underside of the rug is a matching creamy white colour, very well and smoothly felted with Hermione’s name needle felted on in a warm grey colour. Hermione’s fleece is a lovely example of a ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ that will bring a touch of woolly luxury to any home.

Hermione is a Wensleydale cross Texel sheep who lives here with her best friend Luna and many other sheep at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She big boisterous character who loves human attention and food, more like a big loveable dog than a sheep. Hermione came to live here with her half-sister Luna, the pair have always been inseparable and love to charge around the field leaping about.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Hermione’s 3rd shear fleece aka the third fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. This particuar fleece is the nicest of her fleeces so far.

Hermione’s fleece is all-natural 100% wool – animal friendly and over a year in the making, it has great provenance.

The reverse of the rug is made from carded and handspun wool that is then hand felted to Hermione’s fleece. It is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep – Lily, Noddy & Norbert that I prepare and carded myself.

This is a truly handmade product every element has been created by myself and Hermione and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Hermione’s fleece is a mediumweight fleece so it is perfect to drape on a chair or bed and equally suited to use as a cosy rug. It is very well felted and a very good example, very minimal moulting so ideal for multiple uses.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 110cm long x 45-58cm wide. It is narrower at one end and widens towards the other.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and curly.

Colour: The colour of this rug is creamy white with a small grey spot which you can’t see on the photos, it is unique and makes the rug perfectly imperfect. The underside is also creamy-white with Hermione’s name needle felted on.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I used the best and cleanest parts of Hermione’s fleece to make this rug. However, there are a few small light patches of dried leaves and grass seeds that are noticeable on close inspection. Because Hermione has the most beautiful curls I didn’t want to brush or disturb them too much so I’ve removed what I could and left any deeply embedded as I don’t think they detract from they beautiful natural rug..

All felted fleeces naturally moult or shed to some degree some more than others depending on the fiber type. This particular fleece is minimal moulting.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Natural felted fleece wool rug handmade from Sorrel’s 2021 fleece…

This pretty felted sheepskin rug is made from the fleece of little Sorrel (pictured in the photos she is wearing this exact fleece in the 1st photo). Her fleece is a pale grey-beige colour that is darker coloured at the roots. Sorrel has a soft fluffy fleece that is lovely and lightweight and super warm. The locks are longer at the edges and shorter down the centre which has been brushed out after felting. The back of the rug is a lovely mix of grey, brown and beige colours that were specifically chosen to compliment Sorrel’s fleece. I handspun some wool in these colours too and then used it to decorate the underside of the rug, making Sorrel’s fleece just that bit more special. Sorrel’s name is also needle felted on there with a ‘sorrel leaf’. This fleece is perfect to drape on a chair or bed and bring a touch of cosy rustic luxury to your home!

Sorrel is an Icelandic cross Shetland/Soay sheep who lives here with her twin sister Leaf and their mum Daisy many other sheep at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She is a feisty little sheep who likes picking fights with the other sheep and generally wins hence she is definitely one of the leaders within the flock and not to be messed with – a little boss. In spite of her feisty nature, Sorrel is a softie when it comes to cuddles, she loves having her chin and back scratched.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Sorrel’s 2nd shear fleece aka the second fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

Sorrel’s fleece is all-natural 100% wool – animal friendly and over a year in the making, it has great provenance.

The reverse of the rug is made from carded and handspun wool that is then hand felted to Sorrel’s fleece. It is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep that I prepare and card or spin myself.

This is a truly handmade product every element has been created by myself and Sorrel and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Sorrel’s fleece is a lightweight fleece so it is perfect to drape on a chair or bed and equally suited to use as a cosy rug. Like most felted fleeces it does moult a little on both sides, most noticeable along the edges of the fleece where the fiber is longer. Moulting usually lessens and settles down after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 110-120cm long x 75-85cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and fluffy.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a pretty very pale browny/grey beige it is a darker colour at the roots of the fleece and lighter at the tips. The underside is multicolour grey/beige/tan with handspun wool decoration.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Sorrel collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have brushed out the centre of Sorrel’s fleece to remove most debris but left the edges natural to retain the pretty structure and character of the fleece.

All felted fleeces naturally moult or shed to some degree some more than others depending on the fiber type. This particular fleece lightly moults.

Icelandic felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug handmade from Maris’s 2021 fleece…

This beautiful rug is made from the fleece of cheeky little Maris (pictured in the photos wearing this very fleece). Her fleece is a gorgeous warm light golden creamy beige colour that has what is called a lustre which makes it shine. She has beautiful flowing locks that are silky and soft. The centre of the fleece has been brushed out making it super fluffy and soft to touch. The back of the rug is thick and very well felted. It has hand handspun wool and pretty locks from other sheep felted into it creating a unique pretty design. I also needle felted Maris’ name on the back so you’ll never forget who grew this stunning fleece. Maris’ fleece would look amazing as a display piece, light use floor rug or draped on a chair or bed. Perfect to add a touch of rustic luxury!

Maris is an Icelandic sheep who lives here with her twin sister Piper and their mum Spud many other sheep family and friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She is a very cheeky sheep, as you can probably tell from her cheeky face in the photos. She used to be quite shy and wary of me until one day she had an infected ear which I treated for her and every since then she decided I wasn’t so bad and we became firm friends. Maris loves to jump up at me when I have sheep food in my pocket and she also jumps on the other sheep’s back at feeding times – she’s a proper little character.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Maris’ 2nd shear fleece aka the second fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

With this particular rug I would say it is better suited to display and light use as Maris is a pure Icelandic sheep she has a dual coat and the longer outer guard hairs of Icelandic fleeces have a tendency to moult, which this fleece does in certain places along the edges where the locks are very long. Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 105-110cm long x 80-85cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is so lovely and soft and silky!

Colour: The colour of this rug is a gorgeous light golden beige/cream/light brown colour.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Maris collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have also brushed out the center of Maris’ fleece to remove all the debris I could find but left the edges au natural to keep the beautiful structure and character of the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular piece, it does moult more than other fleeces as is typical of the Icelandic breed.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.

This beautiful rug is made from the fleece of sweet Piper (pictured in the photos wearing this very fleece). Her fleece is a gorgeous warm light tan and creamy beige colour that has what is called a lustre which makes it shine. She has super long wispy locks that are so silky and soft. The centre of her fleece has been brushed out making it very fluffy and incredibly soft to touch. The back of the rug is thick and very well felted. It has a simple design felted into the back with some handspun wool and locks and I have needle felted Piper’s name on the back so you’ll never forget who grew this stunning fleece. Piper’s fleece would look stunning as a display piece or photo prop, light use floor rug or draped on a chair or bed. It is a mediumweight fleece. Perfect to add a touch of wild luxury to any home!

Piper is an Icelandic sheep who lives here with her twin sister Maris and mum Spud and many other sheep family and friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She is a sweet gentle sheep who loves a chin scratch and will often be seen grazing side by side with her mum and twin sister. She is always willing to pose for a photo and has even donned a party hat on a couple of occasions!

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Piper’s 2nd shear fleece aka the second fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

Piper’s fleece is all natural 100% wool – animal friendly and over a year in the making it has great provenance.

The reverse of the rug is made from carded wool that is then hand felted to Piper’s fleece. That felted wool is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep.

This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by myself and Piper and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

This particular rug is best suited to display and light use as Piper is a pure Icelandic sheep she has a dual coat and the longer outer guard hairs of Icelandic fleeces have a tendency to moult, which this fleece does in certain places along the edges where the locks are very thick and long.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 110-115cm long x 80-90cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is lovely and soft and silky! Some hairier parts along the edges of the fleece have a more coarse hair like feel.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a gorgeous light golden tan/beige/cream/light brown colour.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Piper collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have also brushed out the center of Piper’s fleece to remove all the debris I could find but left the edges au natural to keep the beautiful structure and character of the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular piece, it does moult more than other fleeces as is typical of the Icelandic breed.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

——————————————————–

A lot of time, care and love go into all my items they are all individually made one at a time by just 1 pair of hands – from caring for and shearing the sheep, washing the wool and crafting an item to the packaging and posting – handmade in the truest sense of the word.
