Icelandic Felted Fleece Rug ‘Maris’ – Handcrafted in Wales

A gorgeous Icelandic felted fleece made with the whole fleece of Maris the sheep. It is a good size rug with shiny silky locks that are a very pretty warm cream and beige colour. Featuring thick warm natural wool felt on the underside this rug is wonderfully thick and durable. The felt features a unique pretty design created from handspun wool yarn that complements Maris’ pretty fleece and features her name needle felted into the felt. It would make a very stylish floor rug and also has enough flexibility to be draped across a large chair or sofa. Because it is soft and light weight it is also suitable to use as a throw and would look stunning placed upon a bed. These felted fleeces also make superb special meditation mats. The natural wool provides a warmth and comfort that is unrivaled.

The rug: This Icelandic felted fleece rug is a very pretty cream and golden beige colour. Handcrafted using the whole of Maris’ fleece and backed with wool from other sheep in the flock. The fleece is a medium/light weight and the fleece itself is soft to touch. The rug itself is a medium size natural shape. The backing felt is wonderfully thick and features a unique design made from handspun yarn. This design is carefully created prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece during the felting process. Maris’ name was needle felted on at the end as a finishing touch. The fleece itself is soft and light with shorter lightly brushed wool down the central spine and longer wilder, more hair like locks on the rear, edges and front of the fleece.

The sheep: Maris is a cheeky little pure bred Icelandic sheep. Daughter of Sven and Spud. She is incredibly clever and crafty, a proper little character.

The process: This rug has been made with the whole of Maris’ fleece from her 2024 annual haircut. Maris grew a particularly beautiful and large fleece that year. Carded wool from some of our other sheep including Marmalade, Muffin, Martha, Sorrel, and Pip is placed on the back and then handspun yarn is arranged upon this to create the abstract pattern. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land and barns enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away and growing wonderful wool.

Details:

Size: Measurements taken on the fluffy fleece side. The rug is a natural irregular sheepskin shape it measures approx 110-130cm in length and 90-100cm approx in width with the narrowest measurements at the neck and places where the fleece draws in and the widest parts being across the middle and rear leg area.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and silky. Icelandic fleeces are very light weight and very fine dual coated wool. Meaning they have a woolly under coat and long hairy guard hairs that shed water and protect the sheep from the weather. Though they look wild and hairy they are actually soft and very fine and not coarse fleeces.

Colour: Predominantly natural warm cream colour. With some golden beige and tan tones with a gorgeous natural shine/lustre. Maris’ fleece has slightly darker edged and beige/tan roots that fade to cream. The back of the rug is a mix of cream, beige, brown/tan colours and much darker than the fleece side. Hair loss: Medium – there is a little loss of hair which is normal with dual coated Icelandic fleeces. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): Minimal. As always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt I have done my best to remove the ones I came across. There may be the odd bit of hay deep in the spine/center of Maris’ fleece but they are few and far between. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep. It’s been through a lot, it’s seen a lot, it’s kept a sheep warm and dry and even cool at times.. its probably been dragged through a hedge (or two!), splattered with mud at some point, sprinkled with hay at another and rolled around in the spring clover as it naturally started to rise and break away from its 4 legged creator and I got my shears out – all that and the wool still looks beautiful.. none the worse for wear.. isn’t wool amazing!

Fleeces naturally get washed during the felting process and then they all get a proper wash or two after they are felted so they are thoroughly clean and smell divine. They are left to dry in the open air or sometimes draped beside the stove in winter. I am passionate about keeping things natural and energy use to a minimum when making my woollen crafts. Hence I do not wash fleeces in a washing machine or use a tumble drier to dry and fluff them up.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.

Felted Fleece Rug ‘Ivar’

Slate Grey Felted Fleece Rug ‘Ivar’ – Handcrafted in Wales

This beautiful felted fleece is made with the whole fleece of Ivar the sheep. It is a good size rug with smooth locks that are the most pretty slate grey colours. Featuring thick warm natural wool felt on the underside this rug is wonderfully cosy and durable. The felt features a unique pretty design created from handspun wool yarn that complements Ivar’s pretty fleece and features his name needle felted into the felt.

The rug: This felted fleece rug is very pretty. Handcrafted using the whole of Ivar’s fleece and backed with wool from other sheep in the flock. This is a medium/heavy weight fleece due to the solidness and thickness of the felt backing. The rug itself is a large size natural shape. The backing felt is wonderfully thick and features a unique design made from handspun yarn. This design is carefully created prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece during the felting process. Ivar’s name was needle felted on as a finishing touch. The fleece itself is soft with tighter curls down the centre and more open wavy locks on the rear and front of the fleece. It has a lot of the characteristics of a Gotland and Icelandic fleece like the loose wavy curls and beautiful glossy shine. This fleece will make a superb luxurious rug due to the thickness of the felt. It would also be ideal to use as a meditation rug. You could also drape in on the back of a sofa or use it as a heavy throw on a bed. Due to the thick felt it does not drape and bend and readily as thinner fleeces. It is naturally minimal moulting thanks to the quality of Ivar’s fleece and so suitable for a variey of uses.

The sheep: Ivar is a beautiful character amongst the flock. He is an Icelandic cross Gotland sheep and has the most gorgeous handsome face. He is very greedy and very pushy when it comes to food. He will shove his nose in any pocket hoping to snuffle out a treat. His mum is Frieda a pure Gotland sheep and his dad is Sven who is a pure Icelandic sheep. Ivar was one of triplets. Sadly his weaker little brother did not survive but his sister Astrid did and the pair are utterly inseparable.

The process: This rug has been made with the whole of Ivar’s fleece from his 2024 annual haircut. Carded wool from some of our other sheep including Tawny, Marmalade, Minnie and Ivar’s mum Frieda is placed on the back and then the abstract yarn pattern is arranged upon this using my own handspun yarn. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land and barns enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away and growing wonderful wool.

Size: Measurements taken on the fluffy fleece side. The rug is a natural irregular sheepskin shape it measures approx 125-140cm in length and 85-100cm approx in width with the narrowest measurements at the neck and places where the fleece draws in and the widest parts being across the middle and rear leg area.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and smooth. Ivar’s fleece is a lovely combination of the Icelandic and Gotland breeds. The backing felt is lovely and soft but may feel a little prickly in places where the roots of the fleece poke through the felt, this is normal and shows how well the two halves (fleece and carded backing wool) have become one.

Colour: Natural warm cslate greys ranging from very light to dark with small cream areas and some sunbleached brown tips to the darker locks. Predominantly pale grey, browns and creams on the backing felt. Please see all photos of the rug in different lighting conditions.

Hair loss: Minimal – there is a little loss of hair which is normal. Ivar’s fleece is a particularly good minimal moulting fleece due to the type of wool. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): Minimal. As always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt I have done my best to remove the ones I came across. There may be the odd bit of hay deep in the spine/center curls of Ivar’s fleece but they are few and far between. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep. Magical Felt Wool Meditation Mat ‘Leaf’

Magical Felt Wool Meditation Mat ‘Leaf’

A large sized seat pad with a beautiful scrolling pattern of a veined leaf on the reverse. This piece was made with wild meditation in mind using the fleece from a wild little sheep called Leaf. I wanted to make it special, an item to be treasured, to reflect the character and charm of the sheep who grew the wool, an item perhaps to carry into the forest to be placed on the ground and keep the bearer’s bottom warm or maybe to just simply place upon a favourite cosy chair, there are many possibilities…

The rug/seat pad: This seat pad is reversible. On one side it is shaggy hairy fleece with a very witchy wild look and on the reverse it is textured soft felt with a magical leaf pattern. The item is lightweight, the felt is not too thick or rigid it is soft and flexible and lends itself well to being rolled up or draped and is an ideal shap and size for use as a wool meditation mat. A mix of light-dark greys with brown tones throughout. The photos here don’t do it justice at all. Sometimes called ‘vegetarian sheepskins’ or ‘felted fleeces’ this is a sheep-friendly craft handmade from only natural wool.

The sheep: The wild witchy fleece was grown by beautiful Leaf. She is a little Icelandic cross Shetland/Soay sheep. She was born here with her twin sister Sorrel and is a much-loved member of our flock. The wool used for the backing felt and spiral pattern come from other sheep in our flock too.

The process: This seat pad has been made by pulling apart and then re-arranging sections of Leaf’s fleece together. Carded wool from some of our other sheep is carefully placed on the back to complement the colour of Leaf’s fleece. The scrolling veined leaf pattern is created by very carefully laying pieces of handspun wool yarn on top of the carded wool. This is a meticulous time time-consuming process. The wool must be spun and balled up then carefully laid out. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers nor to I buy in pre-carded commercial wool for the backing felt. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land and barns, enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away and growing wonderful wool.

Details:

Size: Oval shape. The fleece measures up to 75-85cm length and 55-65cm width, the locks are overhanging the felt.

Wool texture: Leaf’s flecee has a shaggy hair like feel to it. The backing felt is soft. It may feel a little scratchy as felted wool often does.

Colour: Natural medium-dark greys with some brown tones throughout.

Hair loss: Minimal – there is very little loss of hairs. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): Minimal. As always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt. Beautiful Felted Sheepskin Rug ‘Sprite’ – Handcrafted in Wales

Made with the fleece of a teeny tiny sheep called Sprite who is a Gotland cross Shetland/Leicester Longwool sheep. This beautiful felted sheepskin fleece is very pretty and soft and very versatile. It is a very good example of a felted fleece rug. Made with the whole of Sprite’s fleece in the natural shape. A good even size with thick warm felt on the underside. The felt features a unique pretty design created from handspun wool yarn that colplements Sprite’s pretty fleece and features her name needle felted into the felt.

The rug: This fleece is one of my favourite’s it is wonderfully pretty and a grown by a very special little sheep. Handcrafted using the whole of her fleece and backed with wool from other sheep in the flock. This is a medium-weight fleece. The rug itself is a medium/big size natural shape. The backing felt is wonderfully thick and features a unique design made from handspun yarn. This design is carefully created prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece during the felting process. Sprite’s name was needle felted on as a finishing touch. The fleece itself is soft with tighter curls down the centre and very pretty wavy locks on the rear and front of the fleece. It has a lot of the characteristics of a Gotland fleece like the loose wavy curls and beautiful glossy shine. This fleece will make a special luxurious rug but equally, it would be wonderful to place on a bed or a sofa or large chair to sit upon. This is a very versitile fleece it is naturally minimal moulting thanks to the quality of Sprite’s fleece and so suitable for a variey of uses.

The sheep: Sprite is a tiny little thing shes very sweet and loves a cuddle. Her mum is Frieda a pure Gotland sheep and her dad is Shamrock who is a mixed breed of Shetland/Soay/Gotland/Leicester Longwool. Sprite was the teeny little runt of triplet girls and her sisters Sprite and Campion live here too. When she was born she was very weak and tiny and needed a bit of help to survive and thrive.

The process: This rug has been made with the whole of Sprite’s fleece. Sprite may be tiny but her fleece is big in comparison to her! Carded wool from some of our other sheep including Tawny, Marmalade and Clover’s mum Frieda is placed on the back and then the swirly yarn pattern is arranged upon this. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. Made with the fleece of a little sheep called Clover. She is a Gotland cross Shetland/Leicester Longwool sheep. This curly cream felted fleece is very pretty and soft and very versatile. It is a very good example of a felted fleece rug. Made with the whole of Clover’s fleece in the natural shape. A good large size with thick warm felt on the underside. The felt features a unique pretty design created from handspun wool yarn and Clover’s name needle felted into the felt.

The rug: A very pretty cream colour with some pale grey patches along the edges. Handcrafted using the whole fleece from Clover and backed with wool from other sheep in the flock. This is a medium-weight fleece. The rug itself is a large size natural shape. The backing felt is wonderfully thick and features a unique design made from handspun yarn. This design is carefully created prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece during the felting process. Clover’s name was needle felted on as a finishing touch. The fleece itself is soft with wavy with tighter waves down the centre and loose wavy locks on the rear and front of the fleece. It has a lot of the characteristics of a Gotland fleece like the loose wavy curls and beautiful glossy shine. This fleece will make a special luxurious rug but equally, it would be wonderful to place on a bed or a sofa or large chair to sit upon. This is a very versitile fleece it is naturally minimal moulting thanks to the quality of Clover’s fleece and so suitable for a variey of uses.

It’s been through a lot, it’s seen a lot, it’s kept a sheep warm and dry and even cool at times.. its probably been dragged through a hedge (or two!), splattered with mud at some point, sprinkled with hay at another and rolled around in the spring clover as it naturally started to rise and break away from its 4 legged creator and I got my shears out – all that and the wool still looks beautiful.. none the worse for wear.. isn’t wool amazing!

Handcrafted Felted Fleece Seat Pad ‘Cerrig Mawr’ – Handcrafted in Wales

Felted fleece seat pad made by hand and sheep. The inspiration for this piece comes from the colourful natural field stone walls of our home and surrounding outbuildings and dry stone walls out in the fields. Hence the name, Cerrig Mawr which is Welsh for ‘Big Stones’. This seat pad is made using locks from several different sheep I have individually pieced them together to complement each other and to give a loose representation of stones/rocks. Piecing all the individual locks together is a time consuming process but the result is a gorgeous mosaic of different natural coloured wool that could not be achieved any other way. Making up this seat pad are icelandic locks from Sven and Maris and other wild locks from Leaf, Teasel, Dash, Martha, Elder, Sorrel and Dandelion this is a true patchwork seat pad..

The rug/seat pad: Inspired by the wonderful natural colours found in the field stone and lime mortar walls of our home. This felted fleece seat pad features a stone theme pattern on the backing felt that has been created with carded wool and handspun yarn. It is a large size seat pad a little bigger in size than its sibling ‘Cerrig bach’. The shape is ideal for use on a kitchen chair or bench or it can be rolled up and carried into the wilds to use as a cosy bum warmer or meditation mat. Sometimes called ‘vegetarian sheepskins’ or ‘felted fleeces’ this is a sheep-friendly craft handmade from only natural wool.

The sheep: This seat pad is very special it is made from the locks from 9 different sheep. A proper Patchwork sheep seat pad. The wool used for the backing felt and spiral pattern come from other sheep in our flock too 🙂

The process: This seat pad has been made by carefully selecting and arranging individual locks from the fleeces of several different sheep. Carded wool from some of our other sheep is carefully placed on the back to complement the locks and create a simple abstract pattern of stones. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers nor to I buy in pre-carded commercial wool for the backing felt. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land and barns enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away and growing wonderful wool.

Details:

Size: This natural wool seat pad is an irregular circular shape. The hairy side measures up to max 75-80cm in diameter and on the underside the backing felted area measures approx 50+cm diameter, the locks are overhanging the felt.

Wool texture: The feel is not rough or scratchy despite the locks being wild hairy types. It has a coarse hair like feel to it.

Colour: Natural greys, beiges, tans, and cream colours with slightly darker roots..

Hair loss: Minimal – there is a little loss of hairs which is normal. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

Natural Wool Seat Pad ‘Elder’ – Handcrafted in Wales

This large fluffy wool seat pad has been made using parts of Elder’s 2023 fleece. It features a simple spiral design on the backing felt. It is a large size and the shape is ideal for use on a bench or sofa and can be rolled up and carried into the wilds to use as a cosy bum warmer. Sometimes called ‘vegetarian sheepskins’ or ‘felted fleeces’ this is a sheep-friendly craft handmade from only natural wool.

The rug/seat pad: This large natural wool seat pad is made with parts of Elder ‘s fleece arranged together in an oval shape. Elder’s fleece is a very pretty pale creamy grey colour with paler cream tips and some brown streaks running through the fleece. It also has a darker grey patch which is actually the area of wool that grew on the back of Elders neck and shoulders. Elders seat pad is wonderfully fluffy and cosy and soft. The backing felt is thick and soft and features a spiral design. The spiral is achieved by carefully laying out the design prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece and creates a marvelously thick, warm and beautiful back for the beautiful fleece. It is a lightweight seat pad the fleece and felt are not as heavy as most and so this fleece works really well as a seat cover on a bench or sofa. It’s also equally at home as a little rug ideal for a bedroom or cosy sitting room. If you are looking for a special seat pad or fleece to bring with you on walks into the wilderness to keep your bottom cosy when you stop and sit down to rest then this little fleece would be perfect to roll up and strap to a backpack. I have one of these large seat pads myself and can vouch firsthand how wonderful they are. I sometimes roll mine up and use as a headrest too.

The sheep: Elder is an Icelandic cross Shetland/Soay sheep. He is a kind gentle character who loves human contact and is rather good at posing in silly hats for photos. Icelandic and crossbreed wool is famous for being lightweight and incredibly warm. It has incredible water-repelling properties and dries much faster than most wool/fleeces. The wool used for the backing felt and spiral pattern come from other sheep in our flock too 🙂

Carded wool from some of our other sheep is placed on the back and then spiral pattern is carefully arranged upon this. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. Details:

Size: This natural wool seat pad is a rough oval shape at its largest it measures approx 75-78cm in length and 55cm at its widest down to 40cm at the narrower ends.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and fluffy. The darker patch of fleece in the center is a little harder to the touch than the rest of the fleece as it has over felted whilst it was still being worn by Elder.

Colour: Natural cream and pale grey with slightly darker roots and some brown tones in some of the locks..

Hair loss: Minimal – there is a little loss of hairs which is normal. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): There were some little patches of grass seeds in this fleece I have done my best to remove as much as I can and any that remain are not obvious at all. But as always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep. Felted Wool Mouse Figurines

A little family of felted wool mouse figurines.

Meet ‘The Grey’s’ a family of 4 gorgeous wee mice. Carefully handcrafted from 100% natural wool from our flock every part of them including the spun tails, eyes and wiskers are wool. Each little mouse is made by me at our home in wild North Wales. These mice are small but mighty detailed and mighty cute. They are made from wonderful wirey wool that was specifically chosen for its hairy texture and fabulously mousey colour. These little guys are looking for a cosy nook or rustic shelf to move into. They come in their own little box complete with soft moss and autumnal treasures they would make a wonderful special gift.

These felted wool mouse figurines are made by a process called needle felting. Needle felting is a way of working and sculpting dry wool using special barbed needles. Repeated stabbing of the wool using these special needled causes the fibers to interlock and tangle and if you work it long enough you end up with a firm solid piece of felted wool.

The inspiration for these felted wool mouse figurines came from the real little things. Living in the countryside in an old stone house we are very close to nature and so hearing mice within the old stone walls and attic at night is something that happens from time to time. One winter though I was sat up late needle felting when a mouse ran across my feet! This was the first time we ever had mice find a way from within the walls into the home. More mice naturally followed and caused us some trouble for a little while. That was when I had the inspiration to start making needle-felted mice – and I can assure you these little critters are just as sweet and far less messy than their real-life counterparts!

This listing is for ALL 4 mice in the photos they come as a family.

Size – Felted wool mouse figurines ‘The Grey’s’ – Adult mice are approx 5.5cm high and the little baby mice are around 4cm tall. Size can vary slightly either way as each mouse is handmade and slightly different.

All my needle-felted items are very solidly felted with carefully added details. They are not flimsy soft needle felting they are worked until the felt is hard and firm. Crafted with a lot of love and care, never rushed and made properly they take a surprising amount of time to make and that’s not even including the time spent shearing the sheep, washing the wool, carding, dyeing or spinning the little tails!

Please note – This is NOT a toy. It has been created for display and decoration purposes only. It is made from small needle felted wool pieces and hairy textured wool and so could pose a hazard for babies or small children. Please DO NOT give to children under 3 years old.

Magical Witchy Felted Fleece Rug ‘Gem’ – Handcrafted in Wales

A dark magical witchy felted fleece rug handcrafted with Gem’s 2024 fleece. A wonderfully wild wool rug it is a large size and features a fabulous witchcraft design on the felted reverse. The designs on the backs of my felted rugs are always conjured by the sheep who grew the fleece and the looks and character of the fleece itself. Gem and her fleece included speak of witches and magical spells and bubbling cauldrons and dark moonlit nights.

The rug: A large hairy rustic rug made with Gem’s gorgeous wild fleece. Handcrafted using the whole fleece from Gem and backed with wool from other sheep in the flock and some shetland wool from another uk flock. This is a medium-weight fleece. The backing felt is wonderfully thick and features a magical design made from handspun yarn and lengths of carded wool. This design is carefully created prior to felting so it becomes one with the fleece during the felting process. Gem’s name and some intricate details were needle-felted on afterwards as a finishing touch. I was very much inspired by the witchy magical ness of Gem and the Autumnal season when I was working on Gem’s fleece. Think bubbling cauldrons, spells, cobwebs and dark magic when you look at the design on the felt. Gem’s fleece itself is shaggy and wild and has a definate wolfiness about it too. The centre of the fleece is softer and has been lightly brushed out. the tail and rear leg areas are very hairy and a little rough. It is a typical wild hill fleece wonderfully warm and durable. Therefore it would make a fabulous floor rug but is also soft and light enough that it would be lovely draped on a bed or a sofa.

The sheep: Gem is a beautiful crossbreed sheep. She is quite wild and rugged like her fleece. She found her name by looking like one of our other sheep who was called Magic – hence Magic and Gem. Gem was bought by us to save her from becoming mutton, she was what they call a cull ewe as she was unable to bear live lambs.

The process: This rug has been made with the whole of Gem’s fleece. Carded wool from some our other sheep Poppy and Minnie plus some dark shetland wool from another small UK flock is placed on the back and then the witchy pattern is arranged upon this. Everything is then felted by hand to become one. It is made with a lot of care and time entirely by hand. Working the felt slowly like this makes for a much stronger even smooth felt. No felting machines or rollers are used to speed up the process nor washing machines or driers. This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by my hands and the flock at our farm in Wales – from shearing the sheep to washing and carding and spinning the wool to the felting process itself. Made as naturally and as nature-friendly as possible. The sale of this item directly sustains the sheep it pays for their feed and upkeep of the land and barns enabling the flock to live long happy lives here munching away and growing wonderful wool.

Details:

Size: Measurements taken on the hairy fleece side. The rug is a natural irregular shape made using the whole fleece including the tail wool and belly wool. It measures approx 135cm in length and 85-110cm in width with the narrowest measurements at the neck and places where the fleece draws in and the widest parts being across the middle and rear leg area.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece varies. It is soft down the centre spine and neck area ranging through to coarse and hairy on the rear leg and tail areas. Gem’s fleece is a typical wild hill sheep fleece. The backing felt feels a little prickly in places where the roots of the fleece poke through the felt, this is normal and shows how well the two halves (fleece and carded backing wool) have become one.

Colour: Stormy greys ranging from light through to very dark brown/black at the edges.

Hair loss: Medium/minimal – there is a some loss of hair which is normal. Gem’s fleece is a wild hairy fleece and these fleece do have a tendancy to shed more than other types though for the most part this fleece is minimal moulting and the shedding is confined to the rougher hairier parts of the fleece. All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. Moulting typically lessens and ceases over time.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): Few and far between with this item, there may be some seeds deep within the fleece/felt. As is always you may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt I have done my best to remove the ones I came across and the center of the fleece has been lightly brused to aid this. This is a natural item gently made by hand and sheep. There is a whole story behind it! The wool it is made from has spent a whole year outside growing on a sheep.
