Bowmont Sheep

Bowmont sheep are also called the British Merino, they were bred from hardy Shetland sheep crossed with super fine wooled Merino sheep. We have one lone Bowmont ram called Rupert. Rupert came to us along with lovely Bo (a Poll Dorset cross) when their owner was rehoming her last few sheep due to a house move. Rupert is the most un-ram-like ram I have ever owned, very gentle and well behaved - which makes a nice change for a ram! Perhaps one day he shall pass on his gentle character and fine wool to some lambs.

The Bowmont breed was developed by the Macauley Institute in Scotland to be the British answer to Merino. It’s the only British breed producing wool in the Super and even Ultra Fine Merino classes. The project closed after twenty years of hard work when EU funding ran out. Bowmont are now very rare and un popular they have a bad reputation by many farmers for growing green algae on their backs in wet winters and having bad feet. However, I haven't encountered any of these issues with Rupert over this last winter..
