Description

Brown felted sheepskin fleece rug handmade from Humphrey’s 2022 fleece…

This gorgeous cosy rug is made from the 2022 fleece of Humphrey! His fleece is a warm caramel and tan colour, huge in size, there is something very Autumnal and bear-like about it! The underside of the rug is a matching brown/tan/caramel colour with handspun wool yarn felted in for decoration and a lovely texture. I have needle-felted Humphrey’s name on too. This is a lovely versatile example of a felted fleece that would work perfectly as a floor rug or cover on a chair, sofa or bed this Autumn and Winter.

Humphrey’s fleece is big! It is a medium/heavyweight fleece, lovely and thick and very warm. The staple length of the fleece is short down the back/center of the rug and longer at the neck and back legs. The structure is a wavy spiral and soft to the touch. This rug is minimal moulting with almost no loss of fibers so it is perfect to use on a sofa or bed and cosy up under this Autumn.

The back of the rug is made from carded wool that is then hand-felted to Humphrey’s fleece. That felted wool is a mix of wool from Humphrey and some of my other sheep – Martha and Marmalade. It also has wool from the Aklah flock in Malton. The beautiful decoration on the back is created with my own handspun yarn that is carefully arranged in a pattern before the rug is felted. I spend a huge amount of time and care making sure my rugs are felted to perfection. I am generous with the backing wool ensuring the finished rug is thick and durable and the felting is done with immense care and not rushed resulting in even tight felt that will last for years and years.

Humphrey is a wether (castrated male) Icelandic cross sheep who lives with his mum Harriet and dad Sven and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Humphrey is a very cheeky character who loves shoving his nose in pockets to sniff out a treat. His party trick is unzipping coats and hoodies and sometimes even chewing off said zip and attempting to eat it. His best buddies (and partners in crime!) are Ivar and Elder, the three of them are nearly always hanging about together making mischief!

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Humprey’s fleece from the 2022 shearing and the first ever whole felted fleece rug I have made using one of his fleeces. Each rug is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect a fleece, weather, age, diet etc.

This is a completely handmade product with almost every element created by myself and Humphrey and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 125-150cm long x 90-100cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is lovely and soft!

Colour: The colour of this rug is gorgeous warm caramel and tan brown.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Humphrey collected in his fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where he has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece..  I have brushed out the very center of Humphrey’s fleece to remove most of the dried leaves debris I could find there but left the rest unbrushed to keep the beautiful structure and character of the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular fleece from Humphrey there is very little to no moulting at all making it a great versatile fleece. Moulting does lessen and sometimes ceases entirely after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece and amount of use.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
