Handspun Natural Wool Yarn ‘Snail Shell’ – Natural Coloured 100% Wool

Handspun natural wool yarn made with fibre grown by my much-loved sheep, then blade shorn and spun by my own hands. The yarn is called ‘Snail Shell’ as the colour combination was inspired by the gorgeous earthy colours of garden snail shells. This is a minimally processed, wild and rustic yarn. All the wonderful colours are the natural colours grown by the sheep. This yarn was spun in the grease straight from the raw fleece and then washed as a skein which in my opinion is the very best way to spin wool and make the best yarn.

The yarn is 2 ply and I would estimate it to be a chunky weight, though as it is handspun the thickness does vary. I have included some photos of different strands of the yarn against a ruler for you to study and judge for yourself. This is a big skein and weighs 230g. The length of the skein is estimated to be approx 157m or 171 yards.

The yarn in the photos is the exact yarn/skein you will receive.

To spin this yarn I used fleece from several different sheep from my flock. They are mostly Jacob cross Shetland sheep or some have a little Soay or Icelandic in their mix. Some of the wool I used was the last fleece shorn from a couple of much-loved members of the flock no longer of this world. Its a very special yarn to me spun with much love and memories.

I have spun several of these special skeins for my own personal use and I can honestly say the yarn crochets up beautifully. I have made several crochet headbands with it and fingerless gloves and it looks gorgeous knitted or crocheted up. There is a photo of one of the headbands so you can see how gorgeous the yarn looks when it is crocheted or knitted up. I have also used it for felted projects including making felted pirate beards and dreadlocks and headbands and belts and even used some in a lacey felted cloak and it looked super and was wonderful to work with.

Some of the special sheep who donated their fleeces to make this yarn are Magic, Harriet, Martha, Pip, Holly, Current, Tawny, Sorrel, Mochi, Taragon and Daffodil.

This beautiful yarn is truly small-scale, ethical, natural and sheep-friendly.

Please note the felt snails and shells featured in some of the photos are not included in the sale.

You can meet the wonderful sheep who grow all the wool used for my creations here.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
