Felted Fleece Rug ‘Alice’ – Vegetarian Sheepskin Just Wool – Cream White – Wensleydale x Greyface Dartmoor Handmade in Wales

£250.00

Stunning unique felted fleece sheepskin rug handmade from Alice’s 2020 fleece – just wool…

This beautiful oval rug is made from the lustrous curly fleece from Alice (pictured in the photos). Alice is a Wensleydale cross Greyface Dartmoor sheep who lives with many other sheep friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared Alice myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm them or their fleeces. This vegetarian sheepskin rug is a real heavyweight (a bit like Alice herself!) and luxurious with long wavy locks and the most beautiful curls. It is made using almost the entire fleece that Alice grew in 2020. I spent many hours preparing this fleece and arranging it in a circular/oval shape. It is a unique item as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. The proceeds from the sale of this rug will help pay for Alice and her flockmates’ food, care products, and any veterinary help they need throughout the year.

Stunning unique felted fleece sheepskin rug handmade from Alice’s 2020 fleece – just wool…

This beautiful oval felted fleece rug is made from the lustrous curly fleece from Alice (pictured in the photos).

A natural 100% wool item that is ethical and has great provenance – it has been made in its entirety at our smallholding. The reverse of the rug is made from hand carded wool that is then hand felted to Alice’s fleece. The carded wool used for the backing comes from some of our other sheep, it was washed and hand-carded here on the farm by me. I don’t buy in ready prepared processed wool for the back of my rugs, everything is made by my hands here at the farm. The backing wool is a mix from our sheep Muffin, Norbert and Rupert. It has a warm beige, white colour to it and is decorated with wool locks from Alice herself, Norbert and Hagrid.

Alice’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, photo prop, or floor rug. It is well felted on the reverse and has an amazing luxurious feel and look about it. I would class it as a heavyweight rug, it weighs a lot for its size so it is probably not something you would want to sleep under but perfect as a floor rug in a bedroom or cosy sitting room. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it may shed wool/fibers to some degree – however, with this particular rug that is minimal.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light in a clean environment use but will last for years and years if cared for and treated with respect. They can be hand washed too.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 120cm long x 100cm wide. The rug is a round oval shape.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is almost hair like. It isn’t particularly coarse nor is it soft, it is somewhat silky and yep like hair.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural creamy white colour with a bit of a shine to it.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I used mostly the clean parts of Alice’s fleece for this rug and spent a lot of time removing any noticeable bits of debris that I’d missed. However, you can still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece..  these are very few and far between. Please note there are just a few small areas like this not the majority of the fleece, the do not detract from it in my opinion and are testament to how natural and lightly processed it is.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
