Description

Beautiful felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug handmade from Dash’s 2021 fleece…

This fleece is being offered to people on the waiting list first but may become available for sale shortly.

This rugged rug is made from the fleece of pretty little Dash (she pictured in the photos wearing this very fleece). Dash is a 3/4 bred Icelandic sheep who lives here with her mum Dotty and many other sheep family and friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. All the sheep are hand-shorn by myself with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm sheep or fleece. Dash’s felted fleece is a very beautiful blue grey colour with a darker line down the centre of her fleece. It has a beautiful wild rustic appearance with shorter wool down the spine of the fleece which tapers out too much longer wild locks at the edges.  This particular fleece is Dash’s 2nd shear fleece aka the second fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

Elder’s fleece is all-natural 100% wool – animal-friendly and essentially over a year in the making, it has great provenance.

The reverse of the rug is made from carded wool that is then hand felted to Dash’s fleece. That felted wool is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep – Mochi, Daffodil Frieda. The underside is decorated with some handspun wool and wool locks making this rug even more unique and extra special. I have also needle felted Dash’s name on there.

This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by myself and Dash and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dash’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, light use floor rug or draped on a chair or bed. Perfect to add a touch of rustic luxury to any home! It has a wonderful wild look about it and is the most beautiful shade of blue-grey.

Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care.

Please note this listing is just for Dash’s 1 fleece – in some photos it is pictured with other fleeces which are not included in the sale. The sheep in the pics are also not included! 😉

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 115-125cm long x 80-85cm wide. It is a smaller rug but perfectly formed just like Dash herself.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium-soft/coarse in texture. It has a good outercoat which is essentially hair and feels it in texture and apperance.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a very pretty blue grey, the wool locks are lighter underneath and fade to different shades of grey some with reddy brown tips.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Dash collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where he has foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece, with this particular rug they are very very few and far between.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular piece that is minimal on the hairy fleece side but this rug is a little hairy on the underside too and so does shed from the felted side a little.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
